Munnar is located at a point where three mountain streams, the Mudrapuzha, Nallathani and Kundala combine. This city of south India situated at 1600 metres above sea level was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government in South India. It is one of the known hill stations of South India. Rambling Tea plantations, quaint towns, winding lanes, and holiday facilities make this a popular resort town. Among the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here is the Neelakurinji. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India - Anamudi, which towers over 2695 m. Anamudi is an ideal spot for trekking.
The high ranges of Munnar were previously caled the Kannan Devan Hills, after a land lord in the Anchanad Valley on the eastern side of the district, called Kannan Devan. The predominant crops grown in Munnar are Coffee and Tea.
Munnar is located 70 km from Idukki. A verdant, mist enshrouded green hill station high in the Annamalai range of Kerala, Munnar is a center fo the tea plantation industry. Some of the highest Tea gardens anywhere in the world spread over the hillsides like a green carpet and are interrupted by patches of original forest where the natural wildlife abounds. The 30 odd tea gardens located around Munnar are privately owned, most of them by Tata Tea, and the the town is excellently maintained. The charming town has a colonial ambience and is characterized by its cleanliness and neatness.
For the animal lovers there are the Eravikulam National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a popular place of visit. Further you may spot the Nilgiri tahr at its natural habitat at Rajamalai. For the adventure seekers amongst the tourists, Munnar has facilities for many adventure sports like paragliding. You may go for fishing or relaxing in the Devikulam Lake, which is another prime attraction in Munnar. You can enjoy boating at the Mattupetti Dam. The Echo Point, Kundala Lake, Nayamkad waterfalls, and the top station are other tourist spots worth visiting while at Munnar.
