Kodaikanal is located on the southern ridge of the Palani Hills in the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu. Situated at an altitude of 6,854 ft above sea level, Kodaikanal is a very quite and charming hill resort. Also known as Kodai, it is a favorite hill destination for holidayers and honeymooners. It is the only hill resort developed by Americans in India.

Tourist Activities

Kodaikanal is popular among tourist for its lovely starfish-shaped lake, which forms Kodai's nucleus. Thick and lush green forests and undulating hill slopes surround this beautiful lake from all sides. On the slopes you can spot bluish purple Neel Kurinji flowers (Strobilanthus Kunthanus) giving the hills a unique blue-purple sheen. It has a distinction as it flowers every 12 years, making Kodai a naturalist's paradise. You can enjoy customary boat-ride or a horse-ride to negotiate and explore this exotic hill resort. There are ample opportunities available for Trekkers. You have an option of about 17 routes of varying lengths, as outlined in a pamphlet available at the District Forest Office. Kodaikanal also has a lovely golf course, where golf enthusiasts can enjoy playing golf, in beautiful scenic surroundings.

Kodaikanal is known for its 16-Sigths-Tour. The main attractions in Kodai includes Kodai Lake, Coaker's Walk, Bryant Park, Kodai Astrophysical Observatory, Bear Shola Falls, Fairy Falls, Kurinji Andavar Temple, Pillar Rocks, Green Valley View and Silver Cascade.

Kodai Lake is the main center of activity here since 1867 when it came into existence. Boats, available in pedal, row and shikara shape can be hired and serve you as the best medium to enjoy this nature's paradise.

Sightseeing tour in Kodai commences with the customary amble down Coaker's Walk. This one km long walk offers you great views.

Green Valley View is other popular tourist destination. It's famous as the lovers Suicide Point because of its sheer drop and winds.

About 2 km form the lake is Bear Shoal Falls, a watering hole for bears which always attracts you to look for bears. But Kodai's most popular waterfall is Silver Cascade situated about 7 km from the town.
