Halebid is located about 32 kms from Hassan and 16 Kms east of Belur. The little town of Karnataka was the capital of the Hoysala Kingdom in the 12th and 13th centuries. On a clear day you can have a glimpse of the giant Gomateshwara statue at Sravanabelgola looming in the distance. It was also known as Dwarasamudra-gateway to the sea - indicating the numerous water bodies that must have been there at the time.
The most remarkable monument in Halebid is Hoysaleswara Temple, which actually comprises of two temples standing on a single platform. It is said that it took about 90 years to construct these temples and are still incomplete. Built in 1121 A.D, the interior of the temple is filled with detailed friezes and sculptures depicting scenes narrated in Mahabharatha and Ramayana. Two massive Monolithic bulls are also carved inside the temple. The second temple is the Shantaleswara Temple.

Also check out the Kedareswara Temple with star-shaped pillars and carved ceilings. Also Basadi Halli, a group of Jain temples, famous for their highly polished Blackstone pillars and carved ceilings.
Don't miss to visit The Archaeological Museum, located in the temple premises displaying sculptures, woodcarvings idols, coins and inscriptions of 12th and 13th centuries.
